Painted in SAI. I really love that program, though I don’t know how to do detailed paintings with it yet. On the other hand I like the ‘less finished look’ for a change! That’s why I’m painting big rough muscles now.

My original idea about Kanbei in Mori camp was this:

…but the mighty Solar Nexus in the back looks like a fingerpainting and I wasn’t sure if the viewer gets the idea that those are Motonari’s spread thighs in front of the man. The story: Motonari is threatening to burn Kanbei’s ass with the Solar Nexus if the hunk refuses to give him multiple orgasms, but Kanbei humbly asks for the key first… Being on top would be easier with his hands unbound.

Tacky title is ok with something like Basara…. Hanbei is the past, Mitsunari is the future.

I like to be faithful to the original designs and I prefer 3D CG over 2D cell-shaded anime characters, Hakuouki fanart has been a challenge because the reference material (Kazuki Yone’s brilliant art) is far from my own style, that’s why I thought that going back to Musou and Basara game fanart would be easy. But I have changed… I don’t feel bad about taking liberties and making my own renditions as much as I used to, Basara Mitsunari’s game design bothers my eye, so I beautified him a bit for this pic. In the same time I should have uglified Hanbei, because the man is ridiculously pretty! But that’s not how fanart works, pretty must be made even prettier.

Inspired by Sengoku BASARA animation, episode 1: Masamune and Kojurou talking under the blossoming sakura tree at sunset and the strange song “Ur” by DJ Tiesto. Not typical DJ music, I used to skip that song on my playlist but when I heard it while I was painting this pic, the singer’s tired voice and confused feelings were perfect for Masamune (who looks kind of confused [but pleased] in my pic)

The scene in the anime is interesting… You can actually see the Date army soldiers watching the big tree on the hill and you know THEY know what’s going to happen there. And the tree is SHAKING! I swear!
